a personal reflection on the Artistic process

Embracing the Fluidity and the Journey of Artistic Projects through a Letter of Commitment

Artistic endeavors are inherently different from classical projects. Unlike classical projects where we have a defined goal and a clear outcome we strive towards; artistic projects thrive in ambiguity. When we have a specific outcome in mind, our work mainly involves figuring out the steps to get there.

In the realm of art, our goals are often hazy, discovered and refined as we journey through the creative process. Artistic projects are more like journeys with a blurry destination. We discover the outcome as we move along.

In artistic projects we can implement elements of the agile methodology in IT, so that we can remain adaptable and open to change.

In the world of art, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that “everything is relative.” However, just as Einstein’s theory of relativity hinges on the constant speed of light, we too must find our constant within the project.

In the fluidity of artistic endeavors, it’s crucial to identify constants—elements that anchor us and provide direction. For me, that constant is the inner work—the deep, introspective journey that guides our creative vision and ultimately drives us to action.

Defining the vision of an artistic project shouldn’t just be a wishlist of outcomes; it needs to be compelling enough to drive action.

Recently, I’ve been part of a community-focused collaborative project on the theme of faith. Despite having numerous ideas, I found myself lacking the motivation to bring them to life. That’s when I realized the importance of a compelling vision—one that not only lists desires but also ignites a fire within us to create and contribute. #

The Letter of Commitment

To address this, I’ve initiated a practice I call the “Letter of Commitment,” which consists of three pivotal questions:

  1. How much time can I dedicate to this project weekly? Recognizing the ebb and flow of life, it’s crucial to be realistic about the time we can commit. Understanding our available time helps us commit sincerely.
  1. What is my gift? Focusing on our strengths ensures that we bring something valuable to the table. In collaborative settings, understanding how to leverage our strengths and contribute in a way that aligns with our identity is key to the project’s success.
  1. What do I hope to gain from this project? Clarifying our personal goals keeps us emotionally invested. Identifying the experiences we seek ensures that our involvement remains meaningful and fulfilling.

These questions help me stay connected to both the intellectual and emotional aspects of the project. Although I don’t share my answers with other team members, having them written down provides a personal compass that guides my efforts and keeps me aligned with my vision.

I’m curious to see how this approach impacts the project and if it can enhance the experience for everyone involved. I hope these reflections inspire you in your own creative endeavors. How do you approach artistic projects?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on navigating artistic projects and the challenges you’ve encountered.
